The Heart & Soul of Java

As home to about 60% of Indonesians, Java offers travelers genuine touches of Indonesia. With the nation’s capital in Jakarta and Indonesia’s major industrial and business centers, Java is a melting pot for workers of all ethnic backgrounds from throughout the archipelago. Divided into four provinces: Banten, West Java, Central Java and East Java. It also includes the special regions of Jakarta, which is quickly rising as one of Asia’s most sought after travel destinations, and Jogjakarta, has a special privilege to be a special region, a centre for Javanese culture and one of Indonesia’s premier tourist destinations.

An Ecology & Cultural Journey

Start the journey from Jakarta, Indonesia’s sprawling, fast-growing capital, it has much to offer from the fascinating old town of Kota, the port of Sunda Kelapa, wonderful museum to excellent shopping & restaurants, all contribute to the vibrant atmosphere of a dynamic modern city. On the southern outskirts, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) that gives the visitor an absorbing preview of the attractions offered by all the country’s provinces. On the north coast a park Ancol, provides every kind of recreational pursuit possible. One of the great weekend gateways is the marine national park of Pulau Seribu (Thousand Islands), off the coast of Jakarta.

Banten is famous with the Badui community, a reclusive group which is living in the Remote Mountain, and unique society which refuse modernization. If you like more on the rough side and trekking, try Ujung Kulon National Park, this virgin tropical rainforest is the home to the world’s last viable population of the Javan rhinoceros with about 60 animals remaining such as leopards, gibbons, banteng oxen and sea-turtles. In the Sunda Straits, between Java and Sumatra, lies the volcano of Krakatau.

West Java offers majestic natural beauty and fantastic mountain panorama. Bogor, a popular summer resort with its Kebun Raya, hundred tropical plantation species planted in this huge botanical garden, or drive up to Puncak, a mountainous resort surrounded by lush hills blanketed with tea plantations. Not far from Bogor wild water rafting at Citarik River is also one of the best activities to drive your adrenaline. Bandung lies on high plateau have a European character with avenue bordered by Dutch architecture of the colonial era. This Indonesia’s third largest city and its technological centre, with some universities and colleges. A fascinating trip that includes a visit to the active volcano Tangkuban Prahu, hot spring resort at Ciater and a tea factory.

Central Java & Jogjakarta are the cultural and historic heart of Indonesia. A thousands years ago its great kingdoms were rich and powerful enough to erect the outstanding Buddhist temple of Borobudur, a huge Hindu temple complex of Prambanan and many smaller temples still presents the same appearance. Jogjakarta, as the cradle of Javanese culture was the capital city of Indonesia during the independence. It is a centre of excellence of the arts, with some Indonesia’s finest dancers and musicians. One of its most famous sight is the Kraton (Sultan’s Palace), built in 1757, Tamansari (water castle), and Parangtritis beach. One of Central Java’s big surprises is its dive resort off the northern coast in Karimunjawa Marine National Park.

East Java has many places of interest easily to reach. Not to be missed is the magnificent volcanic complex of Bromo-Tengger-Semeru, with its active volcanoes rising from the remains of an ancient caldera. Watching the sunrise over the smoky crater rim of Mount Bromo is one of the most memorable experiences of any visit to Indonesia. The other great scenic area is the crater of Mount Ijen, a brilliant turquoise crater lake which changes colors, varying between blue, green and yellowish, is kept hot by sulphur bubbling up out of fissures around its edge. There is Baluran & Alas Purwo National Park, lightly forested savanna which home of herbivores, including herds of Banteng, wild oxen, feral water buffalo, as well a several species of deer. An attractive hill town of Malang, a good base from which to explore the mountains and nearby Hindu temple. Offshore, the island of Madura is famous for its colorful bull races.
